Fractional ages are interpolated for a smooth comparison. Human-equivalent years are a rough analogy; calendar age and your veterinarian’s assessment matter more for care.

How this dog age calculator works

The default view uses the small, medium, large, or giant column of the AKC chart. The four classes have different values at the same calendar age. Breed selection only chooses a class from the adult weight reference; it does not invent a separate breed equation. The alternative DNA comparison is shown only from age one to sixteen and was developed from Labrador Retrievers. Choose a model deliberately: the two numbers answer different kinds of comparison.

A worked example

A five-year-old medium dog maps to 36 human-equivalent years in the chart. At five years six months, interpolate halfway between 36 at age five and 42 at age six: 39. The DNA equation at age five produces 16 × ln(5) + 31 = 56.8, a different comparison.

Using the age inputs

Use years and additional months when a birthday is unknown. With a known birthday, choose the birthday view and check the date the calculation is made on. Date-derived ages use elapsed calendar days divided by 365.2425 to give a smooth numerical age. A guessed birthday remains a guess even when the arithmetic displays a decimal. Years, months, model, and size are visible controls; you can change one at a time to understand why an answer changed.

Reading the comparison responsibly

The chart connects reference values to make intermediate ages readable. It does not estimate the time an individual animal has left, and there is no lifespan percentage displayed. The plotted orange point shows the selected input; it is not a health measurement. Keep the animal’s actual birth record for appointments, insurance, and care decisions. A human-year analogy can be interesting without becoming a clinical instruction.
