The initial choice is a puppy under four months, using the source’s growth factor of three times resting energy. Older puppies use two times resting energy. These broad factors do not define the age at which every breed should switch to adult food. Use a complete growth diet appropriate for the expected adult size; this arithmetic cannot verify a diet’s calcium balance or nutrient adequacy. The meal count changes the portion per meal, not the total daily budget.

Reading the food label

The energy value is different from the crude-protein or fat percentage printed elsewhere on a bag. Find a kcal-per-cup, kcal-per-kilogram, or kcal-per-package value and choose the matching input mode. A cup-based answer depends on that product’s own density; cups from two foods are not equivalent.
