How this cat calorie calculator works

The cat factors differ from the dog factors. This page offers healthy neutered adult, intact adult, obesity-prone adult, and growing kitten cases. The kitten factor is a broad source starting point; it is not a schedule for a newborn kitten’s milk feeds. There is no fasting recommendation, rapid weight-loss target, or automatic calorie restriction. Food refusal or unexplained weight changes should be discussed with a veterinarian rather than solved by repeatedly lowering an input.

A worked example

A ten-pound cat weighs 4.536 kg. RER is 70 × 4.536^0.75 = 217.6 kcal. A neutered adult factor of 1.2 gives 261.1 kcal. A growing-kitten factor of 2.5 would instead give 543.9 kcal at that same weight; the life-stage choice matters.

Reading the food label

The energy value is different from the crude-protein or fat percentage printed elsewhere on a bag. Find a kcal-per-cup, kcal-per-kilogram, or kcal-per-package value and choose the matching input mode. A cup-based answer depends on that product’s own density; cups from two foods are not equivalent. Recheck the label when changing a recipe or package size. An example default is meant to demonstrate the interface and should be replaced.

Meal portions and rounding

The daily energy budget stays the same when you change the meal count. Each meal receives an equal share for arithmetic convenience; that does not require every animal to eat on that schedule. Weighing food can be more repeatable than relying on a loosely filled cup.

The answer is a starting estimate for a healthy animal in the selected case. It is not a clinical weight-loss target or a plan for illness, pregnancy, or lactation. An animal’s measured response, body condition, food suitability, and professional assessment may justify adjustments.
