How this cat food calculator works

Wet-food packaging differs substantially in size and calories. Enter calories for one complete can or pouch, then specify what percentage of the food calories it supplies. Dry food receives the remaining share. A fifty-fifty calorie split is not a fifty-fifty split by spoonfuls. Check that the food is suitable for the cat’s life stage; the tool converts energy into portions and cannot assess the nutritional completeness of a product.

A worked example

A ten-pound neutered adult cat has a starting estimate of 261.1 kcal. Ten percent for treats leaves 235.0 food kcal. A fifty-percent wet share gives 117.5 kcal each to wet and dry food. At 180 kcal per can and 380 kcal per cup, that is 0.65 cans and 0.31 cups daily.

Reading the food label

The energy value is different from the crude-protein or fat percentage printed elsewhere on a bag. Find a kcal-per-cup, kcal-per-kilogram, or kcal-per-package value and choose the matching input mode. A cup-based answer depends on that product’s own density; cups from two foods are not equivalent. Recheck the label when changing a recipe or package size. An example default is meant to demonstrate the interface and should be replaced.

Meal portions and rounding

The daily energy budget stays the same when you change the meal count. Each meal receives an equal share for arithmetic convenience; that does not require every animal to eat on that schedule. The treat setting reserves part of total energy before the food split is calculated. Portions are displayed with practical rounding while the underlying calculation retains precision. Weighing food can be more repeatable than relying on a loosely filled cup.

Checking a plan over time

The answer is a starting estimate for a healthy animal in the selected case. It is not a clinical weight-loss target or a plan for illness, pregnancy, or lactation. An animal’s measured response, body condition, food suitability, and professional assessment may justify adjustments. Save a current weight if you want it to prefill other matching tools, but review that number before each use. No medical reviewer is claimed on this site.
